Eat & Sleep Sustainably at KLCC Precinct: Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s Eco-Conscious Practices

Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur

The Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) precinct is committed to offering a sustainable experience for visitors. This extends beyond the Centre itself, as our onsite hotels and establishments share our dedication to environmental responsibility. In this first instalment of our series, we explore the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur (MOKUL), and their impressive commitment to sustainable practices across every aspect of the guest experience.

Leading with Responsible Procurement

Leading with Responsible Procurement
Masayu Roslan, the passionate Director of Quality and Sustainability at MOKUL , spearheads their eco-conscious initiatives. With over 22 years at the hotel, Masayu's journey exemplifies the institution's dedication to continuous learning and growth. Her drive to "embark on new things and contribute" is evident in MO's impressive sustainability achievements.

One key focus area is responsible procurement. Over 70% of the ingredients used at MOKUL are sourced locally, reducing their carbon footprint. They prioritize local fruits and vegetables, like opting for Cameron Highlands' Chitose strawberries over those imported from Japan. Additionally, MOKUL ensures fair treatment for farmers and producers. All their coffee, cocoa, tea, and vanilla are fair-trade certified, guaranteeing fair wages and ethical practices throughout the supply chain. For other ingredients, they select suppliers based on their published environmental and social responsibility commitments.

Sustainable Seafood & Minimizing Plastic Use

Sustainable Seafood & Minimizing Plastic Use
In line with the latest WWF Endangered Seafood Guide, MOKUL has adopted a responsible seafood sourcing policy which excludes 19 types of seafood from being served at their F&B venues They prioritise options with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) labels, ensuring sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, all shell eggs used are 100% cage-free, further demonstrating their commitment to animal welfare.

The hotel has significantly reduced its reliance on plastic. Single-use plastics have been eradicated throughout the front-of-house operations. Exceptions are made only in rare instances where single-use plastic packaging is unavoidable to ensure the safety and freshness of packaged food items sold on-site. Even in kitchens, where plastic packaging is sometimes necessary for hygiene, they use HOME Compostable materials that break down naturally over time. This dedication to minimising waste extends to food waste management. MOKUL utilizes a biodigester, a natural process that breaks down organic material, significantly reducing the amount sent to landfills.

Sustainability extends to every guest room at MOKUL . All amenities are made from natural ingredients: bamboo toothbrushes, wooden combs, cornstarch shower caps, and toothpaste in paper packaging. The hotel encourages guests to participate in their linen program, opting for less frequent linen changes. Used linens are either donated to charity or repurposed for cleaning purposes.

Beyond embracing green practices, MOKUL celebrates Malaysian culture. They showcase local artwork and infuse local fruits into unique cocktails. Their menus feature regional dishes, allowing guests to experience the best of Malaysian cuisine while minimizing their environmental impact.
