Shop Sustainably at Suria KLCC: Leading the Way in Green Initiatives

Nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC, Malaysia's Iconic Experiential Shopping Destination, boasts a diverse array of tenants, hosting over 350 specialty stores that cater to a broad spectrum of brand preferences. From global fashion brands and flagship stores to beloved local hangouts, Suria KLCC offers a comprehensive selection.

Throughout the years, Suria KLCC has continually transcended its commitment to sustainability. Here’s how Suria KLCC integrates eco-friendly practices into its daily operations, contributing to the larger goal of sustainability at the KLCC Precinct.

Food Waste Recycling

Food Waste Recycling
Suria KLCC has implemented an effective food waste recycling programme focusing on plant-based waste. Trimmings from vegetables and fruits, including those from hypermarkets, the Signatures food court, and food outlets, are collected and sent to a facility that utilises Black Soldier Fly larvae for composting. This process not only reduces waste but also produces valuable larvae that are exported as feedstock to the USA.

To ensure efficient segregation at source, all food court operators and restaurants are provided with separate bins for food waste. The staff are trained to place vegetable trimmings and fruit peels into these bins, which are then collected and transported to the recycling area. This initiative helps reduce the overall waste footprint and promotes a circular economy within the mall.
Comprehensive Recycling Programmes

Comprehensive Recycling Programmes
Suria KLCC takes recycling seriously, not just with food waste but with all types of recyclable materials. The mall encourages the separation of recyclable materials, such as paper, cans, and bottles, at the source. Dedicated bins for different types of waste are provided to tenants and shoppers, placed strategically around the mall. This allows for efficient collection and reduces contamination of recyclable materials. The mall’s waste contractor further sorts these materials, ensuring that a significant portion is recycled correctly.

Despite occasional misplacement of waste by the public, the cleaning team at Suria KLCC conducts an additional round of sorting to maximise recycling efforts. This meticulous approach ensures that paper waste, plastic containers, and other recyclable items are properly processed.
Solar Power and Renewable Energy

Solar Power and Renewable Energy
Suria KLCC has been utilising solar panels since its inception, generating renewable energy to power essential services within the mall. The solar panels contribute approximately 5% of the mall's energy needs, primarily supporting the chilled water pump systems. While the current solar infrastructure is modest, plans are underway to enhance the solar panel system. This upgrade aims to increase the mall’s renewable energy capacity and contribute to reducing its reliance on conventional power sources.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics

Reducing Single-Use Plastics
In line with global sustainability trends, Suria KLCC is actively working to reduce single-use plastics within the mall. Initiatives include encouraging tenants to use paper bags instead of plastic ones and promoting the use of recyclable and compostable takeaway containers. While the transition to compostable materials may pose a cost challenge, Suria KLCC is committed to engaging with its operators to find viable solutions that support sustainability without significantly impacting their operations.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans

Suria KLCC collaborates with various stakeholders, including WWF and other sustainability experts, to stay abreast of best practices and implement new eco-friendly initiatives. By sharing knowledge and resources with peers and industry experts, Suria KLCC continuously improves its sustainability practices.

Looking ahead, Suria KLCC aims to further reduce general waste and increase the proportion of recycled materials. Efforts include educating tenants and shoppers on waste reduction practices and exploring new recycling technologies.
